Instrument Facilities & Resources

The CCE Instrument Shop in room 014 Church offers students design assistance for their optical or mechanical device designs while providing full machining services for ferrous & non-ferrous metals, stainless steels, refractory metals, plastics and machinable ceramics. We also offer micro-spot welding, silver-soldering & brazing, and T.I.G. (Tungsten Inert Gas) vacuum welding of stainless steel components.  Our sheet metal capabilities are 16 ga.thickness and 24" length/width. We have a Veeco MS-40 portable leak detector for your vacuum leak detection needs.
The Student Machine Shop located in room 09 Church is available for students who have completed the CCE Student Shop Machining & Safety Course. Please contact Mike Roy at x-6057 or e-mail at OUr hours are 8am to 12 noon and 1pm to 5pm for both the Instrument Shop and Student Machine Shop.

The Caltech EPR facility is equipped with two Bruker EPR spectrometers, an EMX X-band continuous-wave (CW) EPR spectrometer, and a newly acquired Bruker ELEXSYS E580 pulse EPR spectrometer capable of pulse and CW EPR spectroscopy at both X and Q-bands, as well as a variety of electron-electron double resonance (ELDOR) and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopies. 

The liquid NMR facility consists of two 300 MHz Spectrometers with auto-switchable probe (1H, 19F, 13C, 31P); one auto-sampled 300 MHz spectrometer with auto-switchable probe (1H, 19F, 13C, 31P); one auto-sampled 400 MHz spectrometer with broadband auto-tune OneProbe; one 500 MHz spectrometer with auto-x pfg broad band probe; one auto-sampled 500 MHz spectrometer with auto-x pfg broadband probe; one 600 MHz Spectrometer with 5 mm penta probe (1H, 19F, 13C, 15N, 31P); 3 mm inverse probe.

The CCE Multiuser Mass Spectrometry Laboratory is located in Crellin basement, Room B170.  Laboratory instrumentation consists of a number of mass spectrometers with different attributes to address the broad research needs of the researchers at Caltech.

The Solid State NMR Facility (CSNF) was established in fall of 1998. The facility consists of three solid NMR spectrometers: Avance 200, AM 300, and Avance 500. All are equipped with a variety of both liquid and solid NMR probes so that most state-of-the-art NMR measurements can be readily achieved.

The X-ray Crystallography Facility (XRCF) obtains X-ray diffraction data from crystalline materials and determines the structures of small molecules from single-crystal diffraction data. The XRCF in the Beckman Institute (BI) at Caltech currently collects data on either a Bruker AXS KAPPA APEXII four-circle diffractometer using Mo radiation from a sealed-tube X-ray generator or a Bruker AXS D8 VENTURE four-circle diffractometer using either Mo or Cu radiation from IμS micro-sources. Both are equipped with Oxford Cryosystems crystal cooling systems.

In addition, the facility is equipped with a PerkinElmer 2400 Series II CHN Elemental Analyzer for bulk sample analysis of carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content in organic and organometallic compounds.
