Welcome to the CCE Division
Chemistry is the science of change, and chemists and chemical engineers are involved not just in understanding, but in changing the material world around us. Whether it is through new chemistry for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, new technologies for energy conversion, or new approaches to environmental protection, the chemical sciences affect modern life in countless and important ways.

What's New
Dr. Thomas F. Miller, Professor of Chemistry, has been awarded the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, which "supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences" and is awarded to researchers with a "promise of continuing outstanding contributions to both research and teaching."
Dr. John H. Seinfeld, the Louis E. Nohl Professor of Chemical Engineering at Caltech, was "among the 84 members and 21 foreign associates newly elected to the National Academy of Sciences. The announcement was made this week at the 150th annual meeting of the academy in Washington, D.C." This brings to 19 the number of NAS members in CCE. Please see details.
Dr. John D. Roberts, Institute Professor of Chemistry, Emeritus, has been honored with the 2013 American Institute of Chemists (AIC) Gold Medal, AIC's highest award, "for his pioneering reserach on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and his unparalleled dedication to mentoring new generations of chemists." Please see details.
Dr. Harry B. Gray, Arnold O. Beckman Professor of Chemistry and Founding Director of the Beckman Institute at Caltech, has received the 2013 Othmer Gold Medal. This award, named in honor of Donald Othmer, is presented by Chemical Heritage Foundation and four affiliated organizations: the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the Chemists' Club, and the Societe de Chimie Industrielle. Dr. Gray was "recognized for his revolutionary work in bioinorganic chemistry and his extraordinary contributions to public understanding." Please see details.
Dr. John E. Bercaw, Centennial Professor of Chemistry, has been selected to receive the 2012 Tolman Medal. The Tolman Medal is awarded each year by the Southern California Section of the American Chemical Society in recognition of outstanding contributions to chemistry.

Dr. Frances H. Arnold
, Dick and Barbara Dickinson Professor of Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering and Biochemistry, "has been named one of 11 inventors who are the recipients of the 2011 National Medal of Technology and Innovation. " Please see press release, ceremony video and interview video.
Dr. Sarah Reisman, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, has been named a 2013 Eli Lilly grantee. She has also recevied the 2012 Novartis Early Career Award in Organic Chemistry, which "is presented annually to outstanding scientists within 10 years of having established an independent academic research career, in the areas of organic or bioorganic chemistry in the broadest sense. Two winners are identified, from the Global Research community, each of whom receives an unrestricted research grant." Please see details.
Dr. Jacqueline K. Barton, Arthur and Marian Hanisch Memorial Professor and professor of chemistry and chair of the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Caltech, has been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine (IOM), one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine. Dr. Barton joins CCE colleagues Drs. Frances Arnold, Mark Davis, David Tirrell, and Peter Dervan. Please see details.
Dr. André Hoelz, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, has received the 2012 Kimmel Scholar Award, which was "created to advance the careers of gifted, young scientists involved in cancer research" and is given to "talented cancer researchers for demonstrating the greatest promise and innovation in their work." Please see details.
Dr. John F. Brady, Chevron Professor of Chemical Engineering, has received the 2012 American Physical Society (APS) Fluid Dynamics Prize "For his seminal contributions to the rheology of complex fluids, for creating the Stokesian Dynamics technique for predicting the macroscopic properties of concentrated supensions under shear, and for his services to Fluid Dynamics as Associate Editor and Editor, respectively, of two top journals." Please see details.

The chemical sciences and engineering have critical roles to play in making the advances we need in developing alternative energy strategies, in discovering new medicines and diagnostic tools, and in bettering our environment.  In each of these efforts, synthetic chemists, physical chemists, biochemists and chemical engineers will be required to develop the new tools, new molecules, new materials and new processes that are essential for revolutionary advance. Strategic areas for research in the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering include (i) energy and sustainability; (ii) atmospheric chemistry and climate change; (iii) biological circuitry; (iv) nanomaterials for functional design;  and (v) theory. CCE is home to more than 40 professors and three degree programs. The Faculty's students and post-doctoral colleagues have access to many educational resources, as well as opportunities for both basic and applied research.

The dedication of the Warren and Katharine Schlinger Laboratory for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering took place on March 9, 2010. Please click here to see images of the new building.
